Glacier Bears Game 2
The second game of the year has rolled around for Everett Youth Hockey’s Glacier Bears. Although the Glacier Bears has a rough go of it on the scoreboard loosing 8-2 the kids had a blast of a time playing hockey.

Nik started at center again in front many family and friends. Uncle Paul came out to watch as did Joe and Jessica Laughlin. Jessica does scrape booking for the Everett Silvertips so she took a mess of pictures of the event, she does a great job and we weren’t disappointed. Thanks Jessica. Uncle Paul was vocal, as vocal as you can be at 7am but it’s for the kids so there is no limit to what friends and family will do it seems.
Nik put on a good show skating hard and taking his first ever penalty. Yep, two minutes for tripping. He was excited to sit in the box for 2 minutes and feel shame. Once he served his time he shot out of the box and was back in the frey.
It wasn’t long after that the Glacier Bears pushed the puck into the offensive zone and had their Everett Youth Hockey rival Polar Bears on their heels. The Glacier Bears took a shot on net. Nik was patrolling around the net and banged the rebound home for his second career goal in as many games. The celebration ensued with a mad dash up the ice towards the Glacier Bear bench dropping to one knee, pumping his arm in celebration while sliding down the ice. To everyone’s delight there were a couple more hot laps around center ice and it was back to the center dot for the face off. Happiness is when a goal is scored to be sure.

Stay tuned for more updates. Fun is had by all. The Glacier Bears next home game is November 8th at The Everett Events Center. (I refuse to call it by it’s paid sponsored name). Season tickets are available.

Nik’s first hockey game
After 16 months of lessons and practices the big day finally arrived, an actual game. For reals! The kids got their jerseys with their name on the back and the number they have chosen as their own. Nik was so proud to have a jersey, his own jersey with his number and his name on the back. Mom and dad mighta been smiling a bit too but this is about Nik. Nik wears number 4 for the Glacier Bears of Everett Youth Hockey.
The division Nik plays in is called mites, which is for kids 8 and under only. With Nik being 6 years old he is the youngest on the team but most parents think he is 7 or 8. Nik is an outstanding skater, big and tall for his age. It is a lot of fun for me at practices to listen to other dads talk about Nik not knowing I am his father, and say how is a 2nd or third year player and how good he is. When it gets real fun for me is when I tell them he is 6 and he is a rookie, I have even had other parents say I can’t be correct, he has played before in this league. It gives me great joy to reveal I am his dad and would certainly know that he is 6 and has never played before!
The time came in the locker room for positions and who would be starting. Guess who is the starting center for the Glacier Bears on opening morning, I say morning cause his games and practices on Saturdays is at 7am sharp. That’s right, #4 Nikolai Gusinsky! Pop couldn’t have been prouder, let me tell ya.
Before we knew it warm ups were over and the game was under way, Nik won the opening face off and the skating began. It was a up and down the ice affair when Nik pounced on a rebound and drove home the puck glove side! GOAL!!!!!!! Gusinsky scores!
Yes, Nikolai scored his first goal which he will tell you was his first against a goalie. We have had discussions about the after goal celebration but when it happened, he wasn’t quite sure what to do. But it only to a split second before he was racing towards his bench, stick held high pumping his arms in the air. I was video taping but it didn’t come out that great cause I was a bit excited and was moving around trying to get a better look at the boy.
All the hard work has paid off, loads of fun was being had, mom and dad are extremely proud. Probably what made me the proudest was at one point in the game Nik was in a scrum for the puck and was down on the ice. Players were trying to get the puck and Nik took a stick to the chin. I could tell he was hurt but he tried to push the puck to a teammate and then got up and skated to the bench so another player could get on the ice.
We have had discussions about injuries and how if a player is injured, you either have to get up and play through it or get off the ice as fast as possible so the team is not working shorthanded. Nik has displayed this gamesmanship before in practices, playing with pain, crying, until his shift was over. It brings back many memories of my days in the sun and makes me prouder than no other to know he has that grit when it is needed.
Nik was hurt, I mean he took a stick blade to the face for heavens sakes and was keeping the tears back while on the bench but it wasn’t long before he was up and back on his shift. He is a gamer and continues to get better every time on the ice.
All the kids played hard and had a good time. There was a lot of excitement for everyone; kids, parents, grandparents, coaches…….everyone. It was a good time and we can’t wait for more hockey action.

Crabbin
We are so luckily here in the great Pacific Northwest. We can do almost anything imaginable. On this little foray we went out on the Puget Sound in hopes of getting some Dungeness crab.
My boss has been pestering me to go out on his boat and accompany him on a crabbin expedition and one day I finally took him up on it. It was at that moment I also informed him I would not be at work that day. His response was “me either!”.
So Nik and I went and got our crab licenses and the next morning we were off to the water. Didn’t take us long to get to the secret spot and get our pots on the bottom. And it wasn’t much longer after that when Nik became bored. He ran around the boat taking a bazillion pictures, thank God for digital cameras. He spotted some fishing rods and kept “hinting” how he would like to fish. Finally we broke down and put a rod out for him to fish the deep green sea. The waters in the northwest are green cause we rarely have blue skies above, lol, and it was one of those cloudy, misty days us Mossbacks love.
Fishing, eating sunflower seeds and watching for other wildlife kept him busy but like any 6 year old, it is a chore after awhile. Once we got our crab we took off for home with the crab in a cooler. Aunt Kay and Nik’s cousin Aksana were here for a visit so both kids got to experience ripping the shell off a crab and ripping their lungs out!

Nik playing hockey
Nik playing hockey, now this is a lot of fun for everyone. Expensive, but lots and lots of fun. Way back in the day, spring of 2007, Nik said he wanted to play for the Everett Silvertips. I replied that I hoped he would one day, but first he has to learn to skate. If he does play for the Tips, or anyone in the WHL, that would make him one of the top junior players in North America.
Anyhow, we signed him up for skating lessons at the Everett Events Center. They have a terrific learn to skate program so we put him in it. Nik said, and I quote, “Dad, I am gonna skate so fast. I am gonna skate right by those other kids.” I mentioned that all these kids are just learning to skate and you all will be falling down a lot. His reply was, “I am gonna skate so fast!” and he went walking off wearing his skates thinking he was the king of cool.
The time came for the kids to take the ice, Nik walked right to the ice and on his second step he was flat on his back, eyes as big as hockey pucks, wondering what in the world just happened! The tears started to flow and he wanted nothing to do with ice skating, his WHL career was over at age 5.
So I did what every dad does, I bribed him! Told him if he tried his hardest I would be proud of him and reward him with some sort of surprise. This worked and although he still wasn’t sold on the ice skating thing, he kept at it. The first thing they teach them is how to fall down, then they teach you how to get up. In the beginning there is a lot of falling down and getting up!
As time rolled along, he began to enjoy it and look forward to going to the rink to see his new found friends and learn more skating skills. He would go once a week for a 30 minute session and then we would stay for the open public skating session so he could skate around to play and practice with his friends.
This extra ice time really paid off as his skills continued to get steadily better. When school started the attendance by other students went way down. There was one or two other kids in his class on Monday nights so Michelle checked the Thursday class and there was only one kid in it. So at that point we enrolled him in Thursdays as well. With so few kids in the class, it was like private lessons.
So now he was going twice a week and this is when he took off with his abilities to skate. Having the extra ice time let him practice the difficult things for him and he moved through the classes quickly at that point. Just before Christmas one of the instructors who teaches hockey asked us if Nik was going to play hockey, we answered yes. She said Nik has the skills to go into a class called hockey 3, which is when the kids have all the gear on and start to learn the sport. Rules, positions and doing drills with sticks and pucks.
So we enrolled him in hockey 3 which started at the beginning on January 2008. He continued in his twice a week class for skating as well. The more ice time the better skater you become was the opinion we had and as long as he wanted to do it, we would continue his lessons.
So at this point we are at the rink 3 days a week. Monday and Thursdays for ice skating lessons with public sating following and Sundays for the hockey 3 classes which run for 10 weeks. The only way you can play in the Everett Youth Hockey is to pass the hockey courses given.
Nik is one of the youngest kids in the hockey class but he is having a ball and presses on. The first and second session went by with Nik not passing the class. You have to attain certain skills before you get to pass. Nik is in a class with kids that have been skating longer and are up to the age of 13.
Once summer comes around we continue the twice weekly ice skating sessions on Monday and Thursdays plus the hockey 3 classes on Sundays but add Wednesdays for a public hockey skating session called a stick and puck. During the 90 minute stick and puck sessions Nik would have a 30 minute private lesson with the coach. They worked on skating and stick handling.
Nik has now gone through 3 sessions of hockey 3 and has successfully completed the course. He now plays in the EYH Mite division for 8 year old and under kids. Again, Nik is one of the youngest but he is doing well and holding his own. Scored his first goal in a practice game in during the first practice. There was much joy and happiness!
As of today Nik’s hockey schedule consists of his Monday and Thursday night 30 minute skating lessons with another 75 minutes at least for public skating where he skates with his friends and practices some too. Wednesday nights he has a 1 hour practice and Saturday mornings he has a 1 hour practice or a game every 3rd weekend. Even though he has passed the hockey 3 course we asked if he could continue in the class to hone his skills, he is still only 6 years old folks, the more practice he wants to put in the better for his playing ability so we are all for it. So that means he is at the rink Sundays for another session of hockey 3. We go to the public skate at about 12:45pm and don’t leave till after 4:30 on Sundays.
He loves hockey so as long as the desire is there we will continue to support his ambition. I might need to get a paper route to help pay for it all but it is money well spent. We enjoy it and he certainly loves it.

Nik playing ball
This past spring when Nik said he wanted to play baseball, you coulda never seen a prouder dad. To follow in his pop’s footsteps playin ball…….happiest dad in the universe. And this kid can do it all. Hit, throw and run. He is tall and left handed, University of Washington scouts have been notified. Okay, maybe a bit over board but Purple and Gold is in his future……..I hope.
It was a fun season, the coach of the team played ball back in the day and he was great with the kids. His father helped with the team and it was a lot of fun for everyone. The kids played all different positions and were easily distracted by butterflies or a sudden sun burst!
At the first practice after Nik’s first swing and drive I couldn’t have been prouder than when one of the other parents said “Better back everyone up before this kid kills somebody”. Nik can swing the lumber!
So every Saturday in the shadow of Mount Pilchuck Nik played his games. I am happy to report that Nik hit 1.000, never was thrown out, scored every inning of every game and the team never lost a game! Okay, okay. It was Tee ball and the kids play station to station (no doubles, triples, home runs or 4 base errors, lol), every kid hits and the score is not kept. But it was a lot of fun for everyone.

Aunt Kay and Aksana travel north for a visit
Nothin better than the Amtrak line between Portland and Everett. For a minimal fee and a few hours on a train, Nikolai’s Aunt KayAnn and cousin Aksana can ride the rails for a visit. Which is exactly what they have been doing this past summer.
Aksana is growing up so fast. Walking, running and talking…….talking a lot! But her new thing is ice skating and going to Silvertips games of course. Since we spend 5 days a week at the rink for Nik’s hockey, Aunt Michelle has taken that time to teach miss Akasana some skating skills. Pictured below is Uncle Eric, Aunt Kay and Aksana at the Events Center for opening night of the season.

She started out with the 5 gallon bucket she pushed around the rink and has graduated up to skating all on her own. Lots of good times on the ice. Aks can see the other figure skaters out there doing their spins and dancing so she wants to be like the girls. What she does is kick her little foot out in a fancy Katerina Witt way. What a great skater at a mere 4 years old.
Aks loves to run at full speed across the house and dive on you. It is great fun cause she is so tiny but when you have Nik doing it as well and he knows how to lay down a hit, it can become dangerous fast, dangerous for the uncles!
Uncle Eric spent some time at the Gusinsky home while Kay and Aks were here as well, visiting, sleeping, watching movies and watching a lot of skating. Even Grammy got in on the watching of skating at the arena.
