Glacier Bears dominate Seattle Jr Spartans

Filed under: Nik — Gary @ 10:58 am

For Everett Youth Hockey’s Glacier Bears; Friday November 28 2008, the day after Thanksgiving, was a historic night. Nik’s youth hockey team was given the opportunity to skate on The Everett Silvertips home ice right next door to the Everett community rink against a team from Seattle. Same size ice, just about 8100 more seats and it is where all these kids aspire to play one day wearing the green and white of this great WHL team.

It has been just over two weeks since the team found out this game was going to take place and the excitement has been building, comparable to Christmas. This also gave old Pop time to put together a group outing for others to not only enjoy the Tips taking on the Portland Winterhawks but also to be treated to this mini game between The Glacier Bears and the best Seattle Jr. Hockey had to offer. The group numbered nearly 50 plus all the regular season ticket holders in our section so there was quite a group. When you have a group that large you get a scoreboard welcome so I had the Nikolai Gusinsky fan club put up on the board. Nik didn’t get to see it cause he was under the stands in the locker room getting dressed for the game but when he saw the picture Uncle Eric took………the smile was ear to ear.

Nik was feeling good about his game not only cause he was going to be on the Silvertips ice but also cause he was dressed in slacks, collared shirt and a tie. I told him hockey players wear a tie when going to a game, they have respect for the sport and are to look like upstanding citizens when coming and going to a game. This seems to be lost in sports other than hockey anymore but Nik was walking in the clouds as he walked around the arena prior to the game and strangers would approach him and say he looked nice. That is when he said he is a hockey player and he is playing between periods. More than a handful of people thought that was awesome and made comments that he looked like a hockey player going to his game. He was very proud as is his old Dad.

We took the gear down to the locker room about 90 minutes before the face off of the Tips game and just hung out under the stands. The Silvertips were playing a game of hacky sack but with a ball and invited Nik and one of the other boys, Easton to play. The Tip players were nice to the kids and they were in heaven to say the least. When the game hit the 10 minute mark of the first period, Nik and I took off to meet the team to get all his gear on. He got dressed in record time, excitement can do that to a fella.

While getting dressed Nik was informed he would take the opening face off as the starting center. Holy cow, I didn’t think he could get more excited but I was way wrong on that one. Starting center for the Glacier Bears game on the Silvertips ice in front of the whole world!!!!!!

So the time finally came to take the ice and for the fun to start. The kids had just 5 to 6 minutes of ice time for the game before they would have to come off to give enough time for the Zamboni to resurface the ice. It was a one sided affair with the Glacier Bears in complete control. After a shot from the high slot, Nik was able to poke the rebound into the net for a goal. Celebration was instant! The game continued on and after the mini game the Glacier bears prevailed 3 goals to zero for Seattle.

Cool part about the score is it was the exact same score in the Silvertips game, Tips shut out the hapless Portland Winterhawks 3 to 0 for their 13th straight victory and 40th win in the last 52 games against the sagging Portland team. We love it when Portland comes to town, we have a great time cause our boys score goals early and often and they just can’t light the lamp. In four games this year Portland has scored 3 goals against Tip net minders. GO TIPS! GO GLACIER BEARS!

Once the final horn sounded to the mini game, it was a mad rush back into the locker room to get his dress clothes back on and up to our seats. As we arrived in the greatest section the arena, Section 209 gave Nik a big applause with some high fives for his efforts. He represented The Glacier Bears, Everett Youth Hockey and section 209 extremely well as did all the kids. He hung with us for awhile and then took off to sit with his teammates.

Good times to never be forgotten. To see images of this game, click on the link on the left of the home page that reads Glacier Bears on the big sheet.

Glacier Bears win third game

Filed under: Nik — Gary @ 11:47 am

The fourth meeting between the Glacier Bears and the Polar Bears of Everett Youth Hockey in their every other week battle for supremacy of the Everett Community Rink took place on Saturday November 22 and we saw a lot of back and forth action both on the ice and on the scoreboard but was eventually won by the Glacier Bears 5-3. This brings their win total to 3 for the year against just one loss.

Starting center Nikolai Gusinsky, not playing at 100% strength, took over the Mite division lead in penalty minutes. Gusinsky is just getting over a cold and seemed to take it out on his Polar Bear opponents.

Gusinsky took over the league lead in penalty minutes by being administered 3 more penalties in the game, bringing his total to five for the year. Today’s penalties were two for bone rattling checks and the other for tripping. The 6 year old Gusinsky seems to be modeling his play after current Everett Silvertip greats Kyle Beach, Taylor Ellington and Graham Pouter   but never has more than one penalty in any game.

I think coach would much rather see Nik play a less penalty drawing game and keep his stick from between other players skates and I am sure this will be addressed in up coming practices. Although the Glacier Bears penalty killing unit has been perfect in not letting the Polar Bears score during a Gusinsky penalty, it puts the team at a great disadvantage and of course Gusinsky can not score from the box where he seems to feel no shame and has actual glee at times for drawing a penalty!

It will be interesting to see what game Nikolai Gusinsky brings to the ice during the next game versus the cross dressing room rival Polar Bears. Will it be the 70’s goon style hockey he displayed in the last 5-3 victory or will it be the smooth skating, passing and shooting we all come to see. Be at the Everett Community Rink for the 7am battle Saturday December 13, great seats are available.

When the word there could be a game between periods of the WHL showdown, the kids were so excited you woulda thought it was Christmas morning. The game will tale place Friday November 28th in the 8500 seat Everett Events Center.

Ticket information is as follows. I have a group of reserved seats for $10 each in the rows behind the Gusinsky family’s 3 season tickets to the Everett Silvertips games. To get the $10 rate, which is a $4 discount, I need to know how many tickets you would like no later than Monday November 24th. This will give me time to pick up and distribute the tickets to gain entry to Nik’s game and 3 periods of WHL action in the Silvertips first game on the home sheet after a succesful 3500 mile road trip through Manitoba and Saskatchuwan playing eastern conference WHL teams.

Halloween

Filed under: Nik — Gary @ 1:44 pm

249 Halloween is a fun time of the year. The kids are excited about pumpkins, dressing up and candy. The parents are excited about candy, especially this parent about anything that is chocolate and peanut butter. I have all futures on peanut butter cups and the like during Halloween!

The Gusinsky clan started off the harvest celebrations by making our annual trip to Charlton Farms. Actually we go there for our vegetables, honey, jams, pickled goodies and apple cider slushies all spring, summer and fall long. But this trip is to go through the corn maze, check out the animals, and pick out a pumpkin and to shoot some pumpkins out of the air cannon into a slew of the Snohomish River.

We were one of the first families on the farm just like normal. We are early birds. On this day the fog was thick and made it kinda fun to look across the pumpkin patch and to the corn maze with old man Charlton driving his tractor pulling a hay wagon with folks in it.

We had a good time going through the corn maze which had an election theme this year. It had a donkey, an elephant and an American flag. Fun times were had trying to run and hide from each other while navigating the maze.

Once out of the maze we started our quest for the perfect pumpkin. And in true Gusinsky fashion………..we got a big one. Go big or go home is how we roll! The funnest part for Nik was running around stomping on already smashed pumpkins, its great fun smushing pumpkins with your boots ya know.

As we left the pumpkin patch farmer Charlton had taken a huge piece of plastic drainage pipe and made a slide for the kids, Nik had great fun running in circles sliding down the inside. It took some doing to drag him away from that but the next exhibit, which is on the way out, is the cannon firing small pumpkins 250 hundred yards into the slew. Now this is cool. They let you put the pumpkin in the cannon, the air line is primed and then they let you flip the handle to fire the weapon. Great fun at a dollar a shot…….what a racket, lol.

So our morning at the farm was fun per usual. It was also my last chance to pick up a jar of pickled green olives with chipotle and some sweet and hot peanuts. Gotta stock up till spring ya know!

Halloween finally arrived in earnest; The Silvertips had a game against the hated Spokane Chiefs so the Tips invited the kids to come early for trick or treating and had players out handing candy to the kids. …….even Sarah Palin showed up to the game!  There were a lot of great costumes, Nik was a desert commando. It was a fun night and a great game won by your Everett Silvertips 3-2.
