Chilliwack British Columbia to see the Silvertips

Filed under: Family Outings — Gary @ 1:04 pm

December 28 we cruised up to Chilliwack British Columbia just across the border in Canada to see the Silvertips take on the Chilliwack Bruins. Chilliwack is only about 110 miles from our house so it is an easy trip to make in a day and since it was a Sunday game it started at 5pm, that makes it even nicer.

The Tips had over 100 fans make the trip up, I bought 22 for my group alone, and we lived up to our reputation as loud fans for our boys. We even had a couple from Southern Illinios, look in the picture towards the center to the right, recognize those people?

We had a late lunch; early dinner at my favorite Canadian pit stop, Earl’s. Love that place. The folks in Chilliwack are very nice and happy we make the trip up for a game. It really is a pleasure to visit their barn for a game. Making it even nicer for the trip home was the fact that we won the game. Even with nearly 3 feet of snow fall the roads were perfect and had no issues on the drive. Good times in Chilliwack.

Gusinsky family Christmas 2008

Filed under: Family — Gary @ 3:06 pm

Christmas morning couldn’t come fast enough for Nik, the excitement had more build up than a Mount Saint Helens lava dome! But Nik fell asleep relatively quickly after the traditional putting out of milk, cookies and carrots and of course the reading of The Night Before Christmas.

005

After a hearty traditional potato sausage supper and a Christmas show sung by Nik in front of the tree and after his one gift was opened, Nik was sound asleep. Last minute details were taken care of and off to bed we went. I am an early riser so it was extremely difficult to lay in bed awake for 3 hours waiting for Nik to wake up to rush into mom and dad’s bedroom to announce Santa had arrived. I was hoping he would wake up by 6am but it was closer to 7am. That was a long 3 hours!

The time finally arrived and we were made aware that Santa’s sleigh was repaired and had made his delivery to the Gusinsky house. Repaired you say? Yes, it is little known that Santa’s starboard runner on his sleigh had a crack in it and probably would not with stand 24 hours worth of roof take offs and landings around the world, so Boeing engineers were summoned to come up with a structurally acceptable fix. I made many calls to work during my time off to be sure progress was being made. In the end a group of Boeing structures mechanics were sent to the North Pole to make the repairs to the airframe per a team of Boeing design and stress engineers instructions.

Once everyone was assembled in the front room, Nik began the process of handing out everyone’s gifts. Nik is just beginning to read so it was slow at times and confusing as there are multi-gerantional name tags on gifts. One person’s mom is another person’s grandma, lol. It was worked out in the end. Goodtimes.Happiness and excitement reigned and in the end we had a massive mess to sort through to make piles for trash and recycle.

After everything got settled down Michelle started the massive 16 pound rib roast to cook in the oven and everyone just kinda played with their haul, and what a haul it was! 2008 was a good year for the Gusinsky clan.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and 2009 is prosperous for everyone. For some pictures of the Christmas day festivities click on Gusinsky family Christmas 2008 in the photo sets on the front page.

Snow days at the Gusinsky house

Filed under: Family — Gary @ 9:37 am

Here in beautiful Marysville Washington we don’t get a lot of snow each year, I would guess 6 inches over the course of a year on average in total accumulation. Some years more, some years none. We have had 30 inches of accumulation in the past 10 days. This is a more year! Generally we get more snow at our house than others in the area because we live on a large hill. It can be snowing at our house but raining down at the bottom, this time it has been snowing everywhere.

Gusinsky house snow days

It snowed for 10 straight days beginning December 16 and continuing through Christmas day. 10 straight days of snow is no big deal around here but that is up in the mountains, we get rained on nearly everyday from October into May so that generally means the mountains get snowed on everyday through that time. Heck, Washington has the snowiest place on earth in Mt. Baker.

Yep Mt. Baker, north of us, holds the world record for most snow fall, 1140 inches. It broke Mt. Rainier’s, south of us, which used to hold the record. These two volcanoes really know how to get the snow on em. There have been times when the ski resorts have shut down due to too much snow, that seems crazy to me,lol.

I have to say the plow crews have done really well keeping the roads cleaned and sand laid done in areas that need it. Like I mentioned, we live on a large hill. If the city does not plow it early, it turns to a massive sheet of ice. The hill was shut down for safety reasons but they still maintained it well, we had no problem going up or down.

All the neighborhood kids absolutely had a blast in it. Mostly sledding from the driveway at the house across the street down to the street, making ramps and jumps of course. But also building snow forts and just having fun fun fun. We even played some street hockey on the compacted snow in the street, the puck moved well but sometimes would hit a little rut and change direction and go into the snow, good times.

One day after hockey practice, Nik’s friend came over to stay the night. The next morning they went outside after breakfast and didn’t come back in for over 6 hours except once for some hot cocoa. To much fun.

Gusinsky house snow days

I can remember when I was growing up at playing in he snow and when I got older hunting in the snow, it was always the funnest to do that because it was like a different world. Everything so clean, bright and different looking. I still love steelheading in the snow, so pretty. Growing up 10 miles up the Skagit river between Sedro-Woolley and Concrete we got a considerable amount of snow each year but we lived next to mountains in the foothills. Cold too, I can recall many winters that our creek and pond would freeze. Having to go out and break away the ice with a 5 foot pry bar so the cattle and horses could drink. The most snow I can remember we got was over four feet, I was in high school and couldn’t go anywhere, we were snowed in. I spent my time hunting grouse in the woods, breaking ice every few hours in the creek and hauling water to the house from the creek cause our pipes were froze. Those were the days, lol.

Well, the snow here is done, the weather is turning to a normal temperature of mid to upper 30’s to lower 40’s and of course………rain. The snow will melt off other than the huge piles from my shoveling, which will take a bit longer. Good times in the snow and a white Christmas. All treats for us.

IT’S A HAT TRICK! (plus one)

Filed under: Nik — Gary @ 10:20 am

I am very delinquent with this posting, especially with the news it holds so here we go. On Saturday December 20 2008 at 7am on the community rink at the Everett Events Center Nik’s Glacier Bears took the ice in first place with a 3-2 EYH league record.

046

The weather has been pure hockey with a low of 2 and over a foot of snow on the ground. You have to go to the rink to get warm! In attendance for this game was Nik’s grandparents from southern Illinios who have never seen him play. As luck would have it, this game was not on the schedule, it was to be only a practice. But when we arrived at the rink, the good news was spread that there would be an on ice tilt against cross locker room rivals, The Polar Bears.

It was quite a battle which was eventually won by The Glacier Bears by a score of 8-1. Nik scored a goal early in the first period and there was great jubilation since Grandma and Pa were here visiting. I have been recording digital tapes to DVD the past few days prior to the game and watched some of Nik’s other goal celebrations. We decided he needed more pizzaz so I showed him some old video on You Tube of Cliff Ronning and Tiger Williams from the old Vancouver Canuck games when they would skate full speed and ride their hockey stick down the ice.

Well after Nik’s goal he skated towards center ice waving his fist and then rode his stick. It was hilarious and everybody got a kick out of it. But the best part was everyone got to enjoy it a total of four times. Nik scored four goals in the game. FOUR! My little 6 year old boy was a goal scoring machine. Proud Papa to say the least.

All the scoring for the Glacier Bears was by two players, Nik’s buddy Easton netted four goals as well. It was crazy fun and as always the kids had a blast. In celebration we drove to Cabela’s after the game to have venison and bison brats for lunch and help stimulate the economy. I mighta picked up some ammo while I was there and got Nik a new winter coat. Nik felt I should have bought him a new gun to celebrate the occasion and i agreed but mom said no………..maybe next time, lol.

Since it was to be only a practice I didn’t take the camera to the game so there are no picture links this time. I should know better, I take my camera everywhere, but not this time.

Between the pipes in Bellingham

Filed under: Nik — Gary @ 10:41 am

The day after Nik was goal tender for the Glacier Bears he tended the goal for a group of EYH mites that traveled up to Bellingham to take on the mite team up there. The Everett team was made up of Everett mite players from both the Glacier Bears and the Polar Bears, whoever could make the trek up north and brave the frigid cold, snow and ice.

The Bellingham facility is nice. It’s no Everett Events Center but the rink is nice and they have plenty of room for other activities plus two indoor soccer fields. It is also extremely cold in there, I know it is an ice rink, it’s suppose to be cold but this is beyond the “normal” ice rink cold.

The kids had a blast, as usual, and played pretty well considering this was a make shift team that has never skated in a game together before but The Whatcom Warriors prevailed by a 7-4 tally.

Nik loves playing goalie but he a forward for sure, at least at this point. He is such a good skater at just 6 years old and developing more everytime he takes to the ice. I think this will be his last foray in goal for the year………maybe again next season, we’ll see.

Nik tends Glacier Bear goal

Filed under: Nik — Gary @ 1:10 pm

The excitement has been building for months and as the day grew closer I think the only thing that was or is more anticipated for Nik is Christmas and playing hockey on the big sheet during a Silvertips game. Yep Nik was to be the goalie for his Everett Youth Hockey team, The Glacier Bears.

132

December 13, the big day finally arrived and the excitement was truly massive. Sure he had strapped the pads on in two practices but this was the real McCoy, the real deal, this was center stage with friends and family getting up long before the crack of dawn to be at the game which started at 7am on a Saturday morning.

The game went great, many big saves were made by the young net minder but in the end the Glacier Bears took their second loss of the season by a score of 6-4. Nik had a fantastic time playing goalie but the fun in goal will not end on this day. EYH has a game in Bellingham against the mite team up there, The Whatcom Warriors, on December 14 and Nik will play goalie for that game as well.

Debut between the pipes

Filed under: Nik — Gary @ 10:49 am

Saturday December 13 at 7am sharp at the community rink in the Everett Events Center will be the debut of Nikolai Gusinsky in goal for the league leading Glacier Bears. This day has been long in coming for Nik, he has always wanted to play goalie and his turn has finally come around.

390

At this weeks practice Nik strapped on the pads and was absolute heaven. It was amazing and fun for old Pop to watch his boy emulate Everett Silvertip great and Nik’s all time favorite goalie, Leland Irving. Stretching, scraping up the ice in his crease, doing butterfly kicks, banging the pipes with his stick. Had to fight back the tears of pride.

Most of practice was a scrimmage for the boys and gals of EYH mite division but prior to the scrimmage was about 15 minutes of net minder instruction for the goalies of the Glacier Bears and the Polar Bears. The kids trained intently as it is their day in the sun, so to speak.

Tickets are readily available for the tilt on Saturday, get yours while good seats last. For some pictures of the December 6 practice check out the link in the photo set labeled as Nik between the pipes.
